# Inverse Operations and Equations

Remember that addition and subtraction are inverse, or opposite, operations. That is why you can write a related subtraction fact from an addition fact, or a related addition fact from a subtraction fact.

8 + 7 = 15 and 8 = 15 - 7 are two different ways of writing the same problem. You can use addition and subtraction as inverse operations to solve equations. To solve the equation n + 43 = 74, rewrite it as a subtraction problem. Subtract 43 from 74.

To solve the equation a - 6 = 8, rewrite it as an addition problem. Add 6 to 8.
